Sentinel, Castle Bromwich
Description:
Sentinel (Tim
Tolkien, 2000)
features three half size aluminium Spitfires supported
by cantilever steel beams. The name reflects the role of
the Spitfire in the Second World War Battle of Britain.
The location is by the site of a Spitfire factory, now
the assembley plant for the Jaguar S-Type car. Between
1940 and 1945 12,000 Spitfires were produced at the
factory, then rolled across the road to the aerodrome
which later became the Castle Vale, the biggest post-war
housing estate in Birmingham. The design for Sentinel
was subject to public consultation with Tim Tolkien,
grand-nephew of JRR Tolkien, being an artist in
residence on the Estate.
Location:
Castle Bromwich in the middle of the roundabout outside
the Jaguar factory
